Rear End Differential
Ok, so I have an issue with my Rear end on my truck. It is leaking from the front where the Driveshaft goes into the differential. Is this just a bad seal or is this signs of a bigger problem? Also, is this something that can be fixed on a weekend, or should I take it to a shop and have them work on it?

Re: Rear End Differential
Sounds like the seal... It can be done in an afternoon. I'd suggest getting the bearing and seal kit. Might as well change the bearring while you're down there. Is it making noise???

Re: Rear End Differential
No noises, it has always whined at about 50 mph since the day I got it. I got it with 19,000 miles and just rolled 56,000. I just don't want it to get to the point where it is making noises.
How about a tech day next saturday??

Re: Rear End Differential
JUST CHAGE THE SEAL.FORD HAS A PROBLEM WITH THESE. MOST OF THE TIME IT IS FROM THE PINION NUT BACKING OFF A LITTLE. BE SURE AND GET A NEW NUT ALSO. WE HAVE 62 TRUCKS SOME NEVER HAVE THIS PROBLEM, BUT MOST DO. BE SURE AND CHANGE THE OIL WHILE YOUR THERE 75/140 SYNTHETIC. MY GUYS IN THE SHOP DO THESE IN ABOUT AN HOUR SO GIVE YOURSELF 2-3 HOURS. HOPE THIS HELPS.

Re: Rear End Differential
Easy fix.Done my chevy in about 1.5 hours.I marked the nut and housing. When you put the nut back on tighten just past the mark on the housing. If you use a new nut you will need a good sized torque wrench.

Re: Rear End Differential
Thanks all for your info, sounds like we have it diagnosed.
Again, I would like to find some help doing this. Living in an Apartment leaves you with limited resources to be able to do such things like change out your rear end fluid. Anywho, if someone has a place, and doesnt mind spending a little bit of time, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks all.

We have a shop at my house. My dad is a mechanic and he does a lot of his work for his clients out there. Always open if you or someone else needs to use it.

Jessica it's funny you should bring that up as Jarrod is the club rental. Paul tells me that his rates are very reasonable! hehe. I hope on a serious note all gets fixed for ya. We can't have a broken Mustang driving around.

Re: Rear End Differential
Thanks everyone for the help. Hopefully I will be able to get it taken care of once I get back. Until then, I will have to sit here in this oppresive heat in lake tahoe. It is 73, sunny and dry. I don't think I can stand it much longer. :-D

Re: Rear End Differential
Ok so does that mean I get to use his car?!?! I dont like this chrysler sebring they gave me. I asked them if they had a mustang to rent but that was a quick negative. Well i dont have to pay for my rental. So i was thinking we should just swap! She will get fixed by wed. and all will be good. The side was just dented in a little but somehow managed to still be 843 dollars.
