I heard 3.73s were good for automatics and 4.10s for standards. They say there is a big difference from 3.73s and switching to 4.10s. I don't have them but its just what I heard.

In all my years of driving stangs, there where few mods I noticed a for sure difference. One being N2O, one being supercharger and the other one is gears. You could gain a easy 3 tenths at least at the track from gears. Well worth it for NA motors to get the stock gears out. I always went with 3.73's, nice overall gear that isn't to much on the highway with 5 speed tranny.

well im going with 3.73s cause if i do 4.10's then when i put a supercharger in(im going to its just going to be awhile) i'll have issues with running out of gear WAY fast.

I have 4.10's on a whipple charged Mustang and love it. Damn, I always forget that I have 20 inch rims so never mind 3.73's do make sense.

Yeah this is going to be my next purchase, probably in a month or two. I will probably go with 4.10's also because I have 20 inch rims too. Do not think it will make a huge difference if I went with 3.73's with 20 inch rims.

Glad you like them Chris, how long did it take Benji to get them installed?

4.10's and a sc'er means you just need taller tires for the track. you'll be wanting them anyway and until you get that sc'er you'll be much happier. better mileage around town also and hardly noticable on the highway. maybe a couple mpg difference. personally that's not nearly enough for me to give up the performance differance whether i was manual or auto.

ok i was on the turnpike and was playing with the car and was wondering wat the 5th gear had, and i was supprised, it had a steady climb, the 4:10s have a lot more get up and go it gets jumps out in stead of just siting there. i also put in a aluminum drive shaft, 31 spline axles, and a eaton possy, and i run a 17 in wheel so i have 3:73 will just piss u off and 3:90 will make kick your own ass for not puting in 4:10 it cost me 1100 dollars in parts and 260 dollars to install i reccomend to use bob hurley good guys

When I'm racing I shift at 6500. I use a 275/40/17 DR. I can go with a slightly taller tire to take away a small amount of gear. I think the 430's will only raise my rpm 200 or so. Which believe it or not in the s197 cars is very doable. I dont spend hours on the highway so a 430 gear should be ok. I'm looking for an 11 second run this year and I think I'm gonna need the taller gear to get me there.

Ok I have heard people talk about floating a valve. I have looked and tried to research on what that exactly is. Can you guys explain to me what it is and the damage it causes the engine?

Not sure how well you can float a valve on a overhead cam car. Basically you reve the motor to a point that the springs can no longer apply enough pressure on the valve to close it fully thus "floating" the valve. More common on pushrod cars. I suppose that it could happen on modular engines too. If its severe enough you can slam the piston into the valve and destroy your motor.

it is where your engine is tuning faster than your valve spring in retract, basicly both valve are open at the same time it is not the best thing for it but there is nothing like pushing it to its limits

I see. That is alot of rpm to turn! I was worried because I was turning almost 6200 at the finish line.

I'm hoping for that 11 sec timeslip this year too! I'm going to run a big/little setup at the track and see where that puts me.

That might be the ticket. I was using some borrowed skinny fronts last year. I think with a full slick and some lightweight wheels at all four corners it should be right there.

I'm still a little afraid of a full-on slick. Still got the stock axles/diff! Just going to run an MT ET Street. Last year, all of my bests were with Nitto DR's so hopefully the MT's will help me out a bunch.

He is a friend of Yancey and I. He's got a 2000(I think) Z28 with LS6 Intake, LT's, 4.10's, Nitto DR's. Not sure what other mods he has.
