Gears and a tune
So I've found the itch to start working on my '88 again. Recently my dad and i put some 4:30 gears in the car which turned out to really suck so I'd like to put the 3:73's back in it. We did this up in Wichita, KS where the car was, but its since migrated down here and I don't really want to drive it back up there to do the swap. Do you all have any recommendations as to where i can get them swapped at, and about how much $$ it will cost?
Also, since I've done all the motor work to the car I've never had it tuned and I think it needs it pretty badly. I know it runs rich (practically pours gas out the pipes) and doesn't really seem to make the power it should. Any suggestions on where to get a tune?

If its not mass air swapped that will be the major problem with running rich. Speed Density doens't like to play well with cam changes due to vacuum changes.

Can you give a list of your current combination/mods list. Tons of old school fox guys including myself that might be able to help figure it out.

Re: Gears and a tune
Sorry for taking so long to get back with you guys, been without internet for several days.
Car has been swapped to mass air
Mods:
Trickflow top end kit (twisted wedge heads, stage 1 cam, and street heat intake)
75 or 80 mm throttle body
30 lb/hr fuel injectors
255 ltr/hr fuel pump
1 5/8" shorty headers, off-road h-pipe, 40 series flow masters
tko 600 trans
4:30 gears
I'm sure I'm missed about 100 other small items. You name it, the cars got it (almost)

Re: Gears and a tune
How much timing and fuel pressure are you running? And def the 4:30 gears are too steep. What is the powerband with that cam? What size rockers? Stock lower end? If not compression ratio?

Re: Gears and a tune
Alright i looked in my little note pad and i wrote 18* timing back in 2007. I'm gonna say its still at that. Fuel pressure, i gotta wait for the battery to charge and i can get back with you on that. The cam kicks in right around 3K. Pulls like a champ from there. Rockers are 1.7's and the car received a new FMS short block which should be at stock specs.

Re: Gears and a tune
Alright, got the car started. To my surprise the car had the factory fuel pressure regulator, then i remembered i could never the adjustable one to not self adjust it self. According to my gauge, the car at idle with the vacuum line on was running 45 psi.

Re: Gears and a tune
That pressure might be a little high with the 30lb injectors. the timing might be a little high as well. Typically 14-15 deg btdc is about all they can take on pump gas. But I always bring it up from 10 deg in 2 deg increments until it pings then back off by 2 deg for NA cars.

Re: Gears and a tune
I found it, decided I'd take a drive and if it was wrong I at least got to enjoy the weather. Really liked what he had to say. Gear swap no problem, dyno tune is def getting done as well.
