Failsafe Engine Mode Empty Failsafe Engine Mode

Post by Metric7 8/12/2008, 8:38 pm

Got this error tonight and it went into limp home mode. Pulled two DTCs, P2106 and P2135. Cleared the codes and also reinstalled my tune; still have this problem. Anyone seen this before? I did a quick internet search; might be related to the throttle position sensor. I'll call Kurtis tomorrow and see if he has any ideas.

Here are a few answers I found on Modular fords David. Sorry to hear about your problem.

"1. Throttle Body
2. TPS (Throttle Position Sensor)
3. MAF sensor

If possible, you want to take off the throttle body and check for any oil, and if necessary clean it up with TB cleaner. Also, I've heard of the TPS going bad, which is exactly what happened in my car. While coming to a stop, the RPMS would drop down below where they should be. A dealer might have to check that one out.

Also, just clean your MAF with MAF cleaner (autozone sells this).

Those are a few good tests to see if any of these parts cause your problem."

Looks like from what Ive read David its probably the TPS or the Throttlebody. The dealership should be able to help you out... Ill think theres a TSB for your year of car...Ill see if I can find it

Here is the TBS I found on your car...if the year built applies of course

FORD: 2003-2005 Thunderbird
2005 Crown Victoria, Mustang
2004-2005 Explorer, F-150
2005 E-Series, Expedition, F-Super Duty
LINCOLN: 2003-2005 LS
2005 Town Car, Navigator
MERCURY: 2005 Grand Marquis
2004-2005 Mountaineer

This article supersedes TSB 04-21-09 to update the vehicle lines and model years.

ISSUE:
Some vehicles built 11/29/2004 and prior, may exhibit the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) and electronic throttle control (ETC) (wrench) lamp on with both P2106 and P2135 diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

ACTION:
Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) to the latest calibration using WDS release B36.11 and higher or B37.2 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the B37 CD. Calibration files are also available at www.motorcraft.com. Replace the throttle position sensor (TPS) following the instruction sheet included in the TPS service kit. Clear all DTCs. If the condition is not corrected continue with normal diagnostics

PART NUMBER PART NAME
3L5Z-9B989-AA TPS (Kit)

David I would suggest taking your CAI off the car and returning it to stock. If the car still goes to failsafe its probably your throttle body and TPS that needs to be replaced. If it doesnt cure the probably I would suspect the tune

Thanks Jarrod - I found those posts about the TSB for '05 Mustangs also. Mine was built after the ones affected by the TSB, but that doesn't mean the supplier didn't have a few faulty sensors laying around - one of which found its way into my car! I just did the ignition-switch thing to clear the TPS memory and then cleared my DTCs again and it's OK for now. I'll probably go ahead and replace the TPS, though.

I would replace the TPS. Its anywhere from $75 to $100. It looks like most replaced this with your issue and it fixed the problem.

I replaced the TPS and gave the throttle body a good cleaning tonight - so far so good; no codes or error messages. Got to where it was throwing 4 DTCs, all indicating a problem with the TPS.

just finished the july motor trend article on the challenger vs shelby gt 500. the shelby won the 1/4 mile and solom course, but in the end they picked the dodge.they said the dodge is simply a better-sorted automobile.they liked it's remarkable value being 4000 bucks cheaper than the shelby.they also didn't like the engine whine. monkeypiss

I read the article... It's BS! The Shelby won every event... but they picked the challenger basically because they'll new.

They got a LOT of flack on that from what I've been reading.

Bottom line they are writers not Musclecar fans...most of those guys are driving shitty cars such as Sables (no offence Paul) and Full size sedans for the Kiddos. In the end they are journalists writing about something they have had no experience with
