Cheaper Heat Exchanger Option? Empty Cheaper Heat Exchanger Option?

Post by Shelby10' 1/14/2011, 9:29 pm

Got this from a member on fordgt500.com

"Buy a used Afco Dual Pass with no fans for about $200.
Call C&R Racing in Indy and order a Spal Fan and wiring. $100. (BTW, they actually MAKE the Revan Racing unit and the re-badged Shelby unit)
Attach it to your Afco.
Sit back, spend your money on other stuff and enjoy reading the pissing match about how great one heat exchanger is over another. (Hint: They're not)"

Thoughts??

It would work, read about it before, I should of got those used ones for 200, just kept putting it off. For most people, just the regular afco would be enough. I mean unless your racing people every stop light, the regular unit will do the job. If your roadracing you got to have the fans though.

True C&R does manufacture both the heat exchanger and radiator for Shelby. I knew this before my purchase, but chose to buy it anyway. AFCO has a newer model out stating that it handles more CFMs than the Shelby heat exchanger...think the fans are a little bigger. But I feel there was more data logs out there with C&R Shelby version. Either way you can't go wrong. If you're not on a tight budget then I'd go ahead and spend the money especially if you plan on keeping your vehicle for many many years down the road. It's one of the best upgrades for this vehicle. If you have the time then I'd do the installation yourself.

I got the Magnaflow 3" Competition Series Cat-Back System

Car is tucked away in "storage" at the moment...I might get some good sturdy car ramps and install it myself since it is somewhere I can pull it apart and take my time doing it.

All I plan on at the moment is the exhaust, upgraded pulley and the heat exchanger. Tuned by Greg of course.

But you know how that goes...you always find something else!

those are some good cams, i wonder why no ones come out with a really good set of cams(non-ford designed) for the 5.4 4v's. maybe theres not much room to improve

Probably cause its to much of a pita to do cams on our car. You have to remove the motor to do them so thats why there isn't much out there. You could just turn the boost up. The only people I ever hear of having cams in most cases replaced the shortblock at sametime to something stronger.

That really sucks. One of my friends had an old Chevy S10 and one day he discovered oil leak. Well turns out they had to remove his engine to replace a new gasket. He ended up spending $2k on an old. lol... Now that would really blow.

Its a challenge to get the valve cover off on the drivers side, cams is something I wouldn't want to do. Heck I don't even want to do long tube headers, just ask Paul how fun it was on his gt500! :)

Headers are not SOOOOO worth it. No point unless your trying to squeeze every last drop out of HP and TQ. The GT500s headers are very efficient and theres really no need to change them.

Headers would be my last thing to do, I am not in it to have 700rwhp. Can't get what I got to work on the street so really don't need to add more. If my goal was 9's in the 1/4, they would be on there, but I am sure I will be ok without them!

Well I know this is off topic for the thread but I got the exhaust on this weekend. The Magnaflow 3" competition system isn't obnoxious like I was afraid it might be. At idle it's very nice sounding. At WOT under a bridge it sounds like a absolute freaking devil! Very very nice deep growling exhaust sound. Can't really feel any seat of the pants difference but that wasn't my goal. I'm going to get my heat exchanger ordered and have Greg order the pulley and tuner and get that done. I had a fun couple days driving the car but she is back in the bat cave tonight. I can't wait for spring!

Watching a show on Speed about the 302. Impressive machine :)

Congrats Rob. Look forward to hearing it!

Best part about the Boss show was the part where they show the two different keys. One key the computer recognizes as the "street" key and the other the "race" key. Loading a different tune automatically for each respective key. Pretty impressive.

I saw that show too a while back though. The best part was Carroll signing a dash inside one of the new Boss 302's..lol. I wish they would bring back the '70 Boss 429. I don't know...just something about the bigger displacement and Nascar intended. :)

MMR makes some bad A$$ cams for the 4v 5.4 and they have done several sets with the motor in the car. i would love to have some big choppy cams hell i would give up 30hp to get that nasty idle. that wouldnt be the case. they are pricey though. not a 200 cam for the ol 351w.
