Thoughts on Gauges? Empty Thoughts on Gauges?

Post by Guest 5/3/2008, 12:13 pm

Has anyone thought of what brand of gauges they want? What brand looks the best with the MYCOLOR dash. Which gauges are more visible at night and look the best? Would you rather have your gauges on the A-PILLAR or on center dash? Speedofsound has some really neat stuff. I know Blingy Bob and Jeff both have gauge pods in their car..

How about some pics JEFF AND BOB!! You guys have some blingy rides!! Share with us applause

S.O.S has great options. High quality stuff there. I think a wide band and something else (your choice) along with a rapter claw shift light would look great on the A-pillar. I think I need to get a wide band and a boost guage on my A-pillar (and shift light). Alan is a good guy to do business with, so I've heard. I'm sure won't be disappointed.

As to gauges I would go with oil temp and water temp for starters. NA cars generally don't need wideband gauges. If you are going to go SC then maybe. The SOS gauge pod is your best and most factory looking option on the market.

WITHOUT A DOUBT the Autometer Cobalts are the BEST match to the MyColor. The only exception to this is the Autometer Nexus gauges. You can change the color of those just like the MyColor. The drawback is that they are 2-3 times as expensive as the Cobalts.

The centerdash area is the best for more than 2 gauges, like we did with my car. I don't like SOS's on top of dash version because it still looks like it was just dumped on top-not very factory looking.

I believe he means if theirs pressure at all..the gauge reads normal...untill you have NO pressure and then it reads dead. It doesnt give an exact PSI

Once I get back from my Nieces graduation in a couple of weeks I'll be looking at getting a wideband and the S.O.S. A pillar pods with shift light. I just can't decide which wideband to get. I don't want it to look too ricey yet I want it to tastefully match my interior.

I also want to get a single blade throttle body...I'm so confused I don't know what to do.

Ya you are correct. I really wasnt into not having a fake gauge, especially oil pressure. Kind of important with my new engine, especially on startup lol. The factory one reads fine until it drops below 6 or 8 psi I dont remember.

I was looking into the Aeroforce piece that scans like 30 different parameters and plugs into your OBDII port. That thing is every bit worth the money. I think they're about $239. I'm really leaning towards getting it and a Innovate LC1 wideband.

I think I will be going with these ford racing gauges. I want a A pillar install and a factory appearance. I like the pillar that appears that the pods are built into the side and not the shape of a teardrop. Does that make sense?

http://www.streetrodderweb.com/hotnews/0807sr_auto_meter_ford_racing_gauges/index.html

Can anyone explain what is really needed for a SC mustang that is running 450 at the wheel? I assume that there is some serious differences in gauge types because some are like 100.00 and others are 350.00 or so...Yikes.

You need oil, fuel, water temp, and boost. Forget the a/f one because if a tune is correct you don't need it. Fuel is the most important when having a SC because no fuel means big problems. Go with the Autometer Cobalts and buy them on ebay.

you'll need a wideband air/fuel guage, boost guage, and imo fuel pressure guage. some will say you don't need the fuel pressure guage, but if you loose fuel you want to know about it.

the a/f guage is going to cost you over 300
the boost can be around a 100 depending on which one you get.
the fuel will depend on which one you get. make sure it's electric and not mechanical.

www.autometer.com

you can see their whole line of guages. i love the nexus line, but they would cost me about 1200 bucks for all 3. reason being is they change color like the mycolor option some of our cars come with

I dissagree.

Although we all want to trust our tuners to be spot on throughout the RPM Range there is room for error and A/F is not one to toss asside as "Good". A slight change in weather..such as winter temperatures can greatly effect air to fuel to the point of "Not Safe". Im one for "Better safe than sorry".

I certainly love the Speed of Sound A-Pillar gauge pods and as for gauges I would suggest: A/F Wideband (so you can personally verify the ratio), Oil, Fuel, and boost.

my 2 cents

Remember that the a/f gauges currently sold are no where near as good as those used by tuners. Most just give you a ballpark number. A/f is good for nitrous but not needed on a SC unless running high boost and pushing large amounts of hp and tq...sure it looks cool but it is extremely expensive as a gauge. spend your money on fuel gauge and oil gauge first. boost is also just for kicks because it mostly sits there doing nothing until you get in to the throttle because you are not always in boost driving around town

Post by Guest 10/28/2008, 1:30 pm

Well the majority of guys running some amazing times with their boosted motors stand by them as VERY accurate. They suggest them and recommend them to anyone wanting to keep their A/F in check and add some piece of mind. They do work or they wouldnt sell them. Tuners tune the cars for that day on the dyno....this means in 100 deg weather sometimes. Now what happens when your out playing with the car when its 55 Deg outside? You going to run to your tuner and ask for a quick dyno?

I am on the side of caution and safety....and after speaking with some of the guys about the accuracy of them...they will swear within .1 . So for me Id rather have the gauge and trust the tuner...than trust the tuner and not have the gauge and blow the motor.

But thats just me...not going to change my mind about that

I always thought the fuel LEVEL gauge was the most important. I've head of engines actually quiting all together if the level got too low. Talk about scary!

I kind of like the dummy lights myself. they are much easier to do away with and a lot less noticable after the bulb is removed. Those pesky gauges are just too confusing to me. All the numbers and needles moving around..Thats just too much..

I agree Brent. I am having a hard enough time glancing at my RPM gauge once my boost kicks in. I feel like I can either drive safely or glance down at the gauge but not both. There is a gauge that the entire face lights up red when you hit a dangerous range and also logs the data of a quarter mile run or whatever your doing.
