removing drivers airbag cover
how do i remove the steering wheel airbag cover? i need to remove it so i can hand carve it to fit a medallion in the center of it, i managed to snag a shelby gt trunk medallion before SAI realized that americanmuscle.com was selling them without VIN# verification and shut them down(i think iu have one of about 5 that actually made it out) any ways since i already have one on my trunk i was going to use this one to make a steering wheel medallion. i plan on using a drimel to carefully cut a grove into the cover and then place the meddalion in it.
so um any instructions on removal?
also im thinking about sendning in my passenger top airbag cover for a signature from the man himself

Step 1- Get in car
Step 2- Start Car
Step 3 - Aim Car at stationary object that is securely anchored to the ground, Trees, brick structures work great!)
Step 4- Floor it
Btw.... no need to remove the passenger side cover and bring it to me. I'll sign it when I see you next.

BTW...after you unhook the battery, make sure that you let the car's power reserve to the SRS drain for 15-20 minutes. You don't need that airbag going off in your face...

Re: removing drivers airbag cover
Jared...if it's the Shelby GT rear faux fuel cap medallion with the new style snake I know a guy that had his replaced with a custom piece that was a dead match. It did cost him around $75 though.
I also know a guy that does custom laser engraving with acrylic and could duplicate the piece too. It would be substantially less. Probably around $35. He has a pic of a similar one on his website that I'll try to post for you.
Either way you would only have to remove the pony and bar emblem cap, smooth out the mounting surface and add the emblems...a much easier fix, but you'll be losing out on using your emblem that you just purchased.

Re: removing drivers airbag cover
Here is an example from the guy who does the custom acrylic work.
All you would need to do is measure the diameter of the pony and bar cap and have him cut the badge above in that size. The depth of the acrylic is appx 1/8" thick. There is a base coat with the color logo and a overlay of clear acylic over the top. It comes with an adhesive back.
To take it a step further you can buy a Saleen overlay which has the mounting pad that will give you a flush surface to apply to emblem to. If you get sick of it,you can remove it and the oem cap would be fine.
Here's the website if you want to check them out. http://www.mtmunlimited.com/

whats the dead match solution? what was the material it was made from? i wanted to use the medallion because it was made of metal but i suppose there are alternatives

Re: removing drivers airbag cover
If you just want to take out the center piece you can pry it up with a very small flat screwdriver. It is held in place with three small tabs that stab into the "horn pad". Do a search on TMS in the interior mods section. There are some threads in there on how to do it.

Re: removing drivers airbag cover
He bought the Saleen cap, stripped it, and had it custom airbrushed. I have the guy's email address I you want to ask him about it. The cap on the Saleen overlay kit is made of the same material that the pony and bar cap is, so it would be metal like you are wanting.
IMO I would do everything humanly possibly to avoid taking out that airbag and cutting on it to try to fit the rear medallion. If I did it, there's about a 2% chance that it would end up looking right.
Seriously look into the emblem from MTM. I know that they are made of acrylic, but they easily pass as being metal and would definitely not look out of place. Mike at MTM did my fender emblems and they would probably pass the sight test. You can't really tell that they're not metal until you are really close and can feel the texture. Either way, they still look good and are high quality and very durable. The only example that I could use is the stock GT emblems. They can pass as metal, but as everyone knows they're actually plastic.
All this could be avoided if Shelby Performance would just come out with an overlay kit for the Shelby GT guys...

well i woul die with shelby branded into my face! lol, i think the airbag cover breaks away and moves to the right during operation. not sure though, have to look. any ways i'll probably go the acrylic route, unless i determine i can do the metal for cheaper. we'll see.

The acrylic wouldn't be anymore dangerous than the stock emblem. When you've seen a deployed air bag they normally break away around the emblem. If you stick with the same diameter of emblem there shouldn't be any problem.

Re: removing drivers airbag cover
Jared...
There are no further breakdown schematics out there for the driver's airbag assembly. The unit is one piece and the front abs plastic cover with the emblem is not removable. My brother said to absolutely not try and modify the cover to fit the emblem...there's a good chance that it would cause the airbag to deploy. He's heard of guys that have been seriously injured just from the airbags deploying from static electricity charges when handling the airbag. Sorry if this isn't the info you were looking for.
