Truck, SUV declines send Toyota September sales down 32 percent

TORRANCE, Calif. (AP) -- Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. said Wednesday its September U.S. sales fell 32 percent, with truck and sport utility models continuing to lose favor as high gas prices and concerns about the economy led consumers to cut spending.

Sales of Toyota and Lexus brand vehicles fell to 144,260 vehicles from 213,042 in September 2007. For the year-to-date period, sales dropped 10 percent to 1.79 million vehicles.

Sales of Toyota trucks and sports utility vehicles fell more sharply than passenger-car sales. The Tundra had the biggest drop among truck models at 61 percent to 7,696. The FJ Cruiser SUV model paced the losers in that category, shedding 65 percent to 1,571 vehicles.

Sales of Toyota passenger cars declined 27 percent to 78,912, with the popular Corolla and Camry models each losing more than 20 percent and none of the company's cars posting gains.

Overall, the Toyota division reported sales of 128,215 vehicles, down 32 percent from last year. The Lexus division posted sales of 16,045 vehicles, a decline of 36 percent.

Slack demand for Sportage, Spectra send Kia Motors September sales down 28 percent

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) -- Kia Motors America said Wednesday, September U.S. sales fell 28 percent, with sharp declines in demand for its Spectra and Sportage models.
Total U.S. sales fell to 17,383 vehicles from 24,087 in the year-ago month, the South Korean auto maker said. Year-to-date, sales slid 2 percent to 228,088 vehicles.

"Considering the current economic climate we are pleased to see consumers recognizing and appreciating our passenger cars for the value, safety and fuel efficiency they bring to the market," said Tom Loveless, vice president of sales at Kia Motors America.

September sales of the Spectra dropped to 3,878 from 5,785, while the Sportage model posted a decline to 1,721 from 4,083.

The Rondo model was the only one to post a gain, rising to 2,642 from 2,564 last year.

Mazda September sales plunge 35.6 percent as customers cool on Mazda3 model

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) -- Mazda North American Operations said Wednesday September U.S. sales fell 35.6 percent as its best-selling Mazda3 model posted a sharp decline.

Total sales dropped to 16,169 vehicles from 25,098 vehicles in the year-ago month, the Japanese carmaker said. For the year-to-date, sales slid 5.7 percent to 215,408 from 228,400 in the same year-ago period.

Sales of the Mazda3 lost 43.3 percent to 6,029 vehicles, while the Mazda5 added 26.8 percent to 1,080. The Mazda6 model saw 3.9 percent lower sales of 3,694.
