Insurance Sucks Empty Insurance Sucks

Post by Ol_Betsy2 6/2/2011, 9:12 pm

So Mom just texted me and was like we need to do something about insurance. It's getting to expensive, I guess because of my little incident in January. So she was like we need to drop to liability or trade her off for something I can afford insurance on. *tear So are older Stangs any cheaper on insurance? lol I'm leaning more toward liability though. :( Any suggestions?

You can only drop collision coverage if you don't have a lien on the vehicle - lienholders require you to carry collision. If you can't drop the collision coverage, best thing to do if you want to keep your car is shop around to see if you can get a lower premium from a different insurance company.

Get quotes from different insurance companies to start. If its still too expensive you are most likely going to need to sell the car.

Cheaper the car, cheaper the insurance. So if you can swing selling the car and paying cash for the next one, you can go liability.

BUT like David said...if you have a loan from the bank on the car, then you have to carry full coverage.

You could also be a secondary driver on the car and put the insurance in your mothers name? That would most likely lower it a bit, but I am not sure how that part works.

Most insurance companies will not let a high liability driver be the secondary driver. We tried to do that in my family (had 4 cars and 5 drivers) and they wouldnt let any of the young drivers be secondary. They want their money.

Might be able to have Mom listed as primary on the Mustang and you as primary driver of her car, though.

we did this once. When I was in high school I had a mustang and 77 f-150. My parents both had cars. So we had 4 cars and three drivers, obviously we cant be driving all three at the same time. I was primary on the 77 , and they were primary on theirs. The mustang was a "pleasure vehicle". Sometimes its good to have an old beater in the driveway. Might just try switching who is on what vehicle and see if it saves you. Also like others have said, shop around.

Yea, that's what I did on my old policy. Had a 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee as my commuter and the Mustang as a leisure car. Basically made the Jeep free and lowered the Mustang a decent amount...

Who are you insured with? I found State Farm to be the cheapest by far, even with my accident back in november...

Well, we're with Progressive and they said my accident when I hit that ice in January was all my fault because I lost control of the vehicle. So that made it go up a bit. Which sucks.
