Throttle Pedal Excessive Play Fix Empty Throttle Pedal Excessive Play Fix

Post by Ponycar 5/23/2010, 12:07 pm

Well as we all know the first 1/2 inch of the gas pedal is almost dead and then the pedal actually starts to work - this is caused by the internal throttle stop inside the pedal assembly - I have read a post about turning the key on and off while slowly pressing the pedal - Tried that ,but it still had that gap - I seen another post about taking the assembly apart and bending the contact tabs internally ( Wasn't that brave ) But, I have some experiance with remote control devices which is basically all the throttle pedal assembly is ,just a remote control .
Unfortunatly Ford did not put a trimmer on it to adjust the end point - So, I desided to fix the throttle pedal "Dead Zone" issue in a safe reliable manner with no risk to any of the components

First start the car , reach under the dash and press the throttle by hand - You will see that the pedal moves about 1/2 inch while the engine does nothing - Now turn off the car - remove the ( 3 ) 10 mm nuts holding the assembly to the floor - Unplug the wiring harness ( Note : The read tab slides to release the plug ) - Take the pedal assemble someplace safe like the kitchen table - Use a Torx-T15 driver to remove the ( 5 ) screws from the side cover - Remove cover , Now you will see a molded area on the pedal that acts as the actual throttle stop - I cut a small shim with some lexan plastic about 3/4 x1-1/4 and slid it under the stop - Then I trimmed it's length so that it would not touch the cover - Then I put a light film of silicone sealer on the side towards the housing and gently let the pedal down on it to verify alignment with the stop - Put the cover on and put it back in the car - Did the key trick twice and BINGO ! - No more "Dead Zone" throttle and responce is now instant

NOTE : Don't get carried away with the thickness of the shim - A little bit does a whole lot. - I tried ( .040 ) at first , but It was too much - I ended up with a shim that was only about ( .015 ) thick and it worked perfect - I tried CA glue but it would not bond to the housing - That's why I suggest a light film of silicone - You also need to give the silicone time to cure so, the shim doesn't move.

This proceedure is to take the useless play out of the pedal which is a mechanical problem - No TUNE on the planet will fix this - That's why I took it apart and did the modification - Sometimes you have to be smarter that the computor.
