Sub Amp placement Empty Sub Amp placement

Post by KevinGT 1/22/2009, 9:40 pm

I have been slowly buying audio equipment for a custom install on my 06 GT. I am struggling with ideas on how to custom install these items in the trunk. I have 2 alpine pdx amps that look really nice. They are about the dimensions of a piece of notebook paper. My next piece is the Boston Acoustic SPG555 subwoofer. Has anyone seen any custom fiberglass installs that had like an amp rack and flush mounted sub? I originally thought on placing them behind the seat but the angle of the opening is not right to "display" the items. Might use the spare tire well and make everything stealth.

Well I have the parts purchased which are the following

2 Alpine PDX series amps. These are really nice and have a small foot print.
1 Boston Acoustic oval subwoofer SPG555
JL Audio speakers for the fronts. I paid $300 for a demo set but they are $800 freaking dollars.

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_136ZR570CS/JL-Audio-ZR570-CSi.html?tp=106

I have the design down to two options. The first option is below and this is a safer option since I can show them exactly the look that is expected.

https://i.servimg.com/u/f68/12/88/90/65/amplif12.jpg

If you look at the image posted earlier in this thread where the Memphis amps are mounted on the board facing the seats, that is what I am concerned with. The angle is not right to mount the amps in that fashion. I want the amps to be "presented" for car shows. Ford did not finish the trunk in my opinion so I am open to cutting and hacking what ever is in there now.

The 2nd option is a little more risky. My interior guys want to refinish my trunk in the same scheme as the outside paint. So when you look into the car you would see a black stripe down the middle of the trunk. The entire trunk would be leather and not carpet. In that black stripe I would mount the amps with a false floor and the sub would be at the top of the stripe. I will have to draw it out to make sense. The amps and subs would all be installed within that black stripe and have flush mounted covers to be stealth when not showing.

Here is the stripe layout on the car.

Wow. Think the second option would look very nice. I like those Audio-ZR570 also when I was looking at crunchfields website, but 869 for those. Damn spank my wife would kick my a$$.

Yeah they were on ebay for a buy it now of 400 bucks. I am not an ebay master but I noticed that there was a offer button on the auction that I had not seen before. So for fun I hit offer and put down 300 bucks and then I felt my blackberry vibrate and look at the email and it stated CONGRATS your offer has been accepted. I instantly had a panic attack because I thought that I didn't really research it like I do other purchases. Well the box arrived last week and the items are perfect.

Hey Jarrod, Sorry I did not respond. I cant keep up with what I have posted. I actually have changed my mind on the system design. I was going to originally go for all show with displaying the amps and subs but am now going to make it all stealth. I am going to go with this enclosure and try to hide it behind a false front. I plan to hide the amp on the other side but same location.

Post by KevinGT 9/15/2009, 2:03 pm

Since my Engine blew up last week I have been somewhat distracted and not focusing on this project. I had plans to buy subwoofers this month but instead own a new eagle forged crank. As you can tell by this thread I have struggled with designing a system I would really enjoy. I am greedy because I want big sound but do not want to lose hardly any space. I want it to impress during the car shows then tuck away and be unseen afterward. After 20+ hours of weeding through google image search this is what I have come up with.

There are two seperate designs that I am combining, both being from Arc Audio in Modesto. There is a front view as seen while the seats are down, then the rear view while the trunk lid is open. Here is the Front view (Seats down) and my subs with be housed in red and not orange.

http://www.frpcustoms.com/2005-saleen-mustang.htm

The rear view is of the Arc Audio GT500 is here,

https://i.servimg.com/u/f88/12/88/90/65/shelby10.jpg

I do plan to hide the amp and not display it like the Shelby. I love that look but when I leave the show I want to cover that with a fake cover and have it look stock. The Kenwood speakers I am going to get have a 3 1/2 inch mounting depth so it should work. Plan is to be done by Christmas it nothing else blows up.

Post by KevinGT 10/29/2009, 10:35 am

I turned the car in on
Wednesday at Audio Extreme here in OKC. I spoke to the lead installer and we
discussed the layout. Once I realized that I would still lose half of my trunk
even with shallow subs I had to change my plans. I decided to forget about two flat subs in the trunk and go
with one big sub in the spare tire well. I will be able to remove it, so on
long trips I will put the tire back in. On short trips I have AAA. J I am curious to see how this turns out and will post
pics as soon as I locate my camera. The car should be done early next week. The
overall goal is stock appearance so we will see.

Polk Audio Polk Audio PA 1100.5 to drive the
entire system.

JL Audio ZR components in the front.

Polk Audio 5x7 in the rear

Digital Design Subwoofer 2500 Series- This
was a last minute change. I had the Pioneer flats but this Sub company is in
Oklahoma and would basically take my flats in on trade if I would use this Sub.
It will obviously be louder and most likely better quality. They offered to
design in gray and black trim so it will match.

How do you like the JL ZR components. I was looking into those for my truck. I also like the C5-C2 components as well, liked the sound of the silk dome tweeters over the aluminium. How do you like them? How much wattage are you running to them?

Hey Jerry, They are stuffing them in right now. I have asked that they hide the mid and the tweeter behind the factory grill. I do not want to see anything in the car besides the Kenwood 8120. I am hoping to meet KBCal on Nov 7th to get a tune so maybe we could meet up and you could hear for yourself.

The range is good but it all depends on the light and how steady your hand is. I bought the little tripod and use that for most family events.
