project Shield
well i had a change of plans i'm going to build a max effort 3v motor instead of the 2v. i should be able to get alot more hp out of it
build list so far:
seasoned teksid block bored .020 over (purchased, needs to be finish honed)
federal mogul DOHC bearing kit(FM-7289M10-STD) - .010 undersized
cobra crank- cryo treated
Manley 4.6L Forged Steel "H-Beam" Connecting Rods w/ARP 2000 Rod Bolts
stock seasoned 3V heads - stage 3 MMR port, 1mm+valves, milled for increased compression(will update after i finish crunching numers)
comp cams SPR 127600 "stage 3 NA cams"
ford racing intake manifold
MMR performance water pump 403430
forged diamond racing pistons flat top pistons(12.1:1 compression ratio)
diamond ring set
stock head gaskets (.036 thickness)
manley stainless steel valves
HP target is 480 hp minimum. shouldnt be a problem
i still have alot of things to decide on. will probably use manley valves. billet oil pump is a must, i plan to spin this engine to 7500 rpm. i'll update as i decide on parts for now heres a little preview.

Re: project Shield
Just curious, but why not go with TrickFlow heads for this build. The cost of MMR stage 3 heads won't be much cheaper. The TF heads will allow greater PTV clearance than a ported PI head would.
BTW, if you really want to see 400rwhp then IMO the TF heads with about 12:1 compression is the way to go. That is a # that has rarely been achieved NA with a 2v.
When all is said and done, this 400rwhp 2valve is gonna be far from "cheap, cheap, cheap"! Might as well just use stock heads/cams and just supercharge it.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a 400rwhp NA 2valve running around here!

Re: project Shield
the MMR stage 3 heads are only 850 dollars(not including seasoned heads. add 100-150 dollars) trickflow heads are 1800 unported(they flow about the same as fully ported pi heads) i have completly ruled out tfs heads i just dont want to bite the bullet....then again if i do i could use a stage 4 cam....
im planning on about 11: 1 compression so i can run 91 pump gas with out any kind of booster. add in a 7500 rpm limiter and i think i can make it. i know the 2v's can be hard to make power with. just have to be prepared to spin them to the moon.
400 at the crank shouldnt be a problem...400 to the wheels though thats a whole different ball game

Re: project Shield
Ok, 400 at the crank will be a little easier to achieve. But still a lofty # for an NA 2v.
Btw, where are you getting the figure for stage 3 MMR heads? On their site it shows them being $1599.

Re: project Shield
thats if you buy a new set from them, if you send them seasoned heads the porting is only 850 dollars.

Re: project Shield
when did "used" become "seasoned"
did this happen the same day "trash-man" became "waste disposal specialist"?

Re: project Shield
If I were you I would have them put the inserts in for each spark plug hole. Those model year PI heads on have about 3-4 threads holding the plugs in and are known for plug blowout.
Btw, I saw your car yesterday off of 41st street. It was looking good man!

Re: project Shield
Greg has a set so I'm going to buy his. The guy I was going to buy the heads from couldn't tell me about the car the heads came off of. I'll do the mod after I get them ported

Re: project Shield
well i think im going to switch to a 3v set up instead of a 2v. for only a few hundred more i'll make far more horsepower then with the two valve in a similar set up and the weight penalty is minimal. i'll post a list when i make my decision. prolly gonna use flat top pistons and deck the heads to achieve a 12:1 compression ratio

Re: project Shield
If your doing 3V you should go by Curtis' shop and look at Mikes car. Blown 3v in a new edge sn95 car. Pretty cool.

Re: project Shield
i've seen the new edge car, it has a bastardized engine(not that mines not going to be similar) iron block with 3 valve heads on it. last time i saw it it ran 9s. fast car. mines going to use an aluminum block so itll be alot lighter and alot better for road racing(should be around 200 pounds off the nose after its all said and done)

Re: project Shield
Be careful with MMR...they have been known to screw people, but that was a while back. Just make sure you document what your sending them, what work needs to be done, and dont except anything less.
