Re: CEL "Check Charging System"
Update: had the alternator rebuilt locally. Cost $130 and it puts out just a tad under 200 amps. Switched it out tonight and so far so good. Maybe it will be solid now?

Sweet, never even paid attention to location of the alternator on ours, was it hard?

Re: CEL "Check Charging System"
Yeah it's a real pain in the ass. You have to disconnect quite a bit to get it out.

Re: CEL "Check Charging System"
Any more luck since the meet today? Be sure to let us know what happens when you take it back to the guy who rebuilt it...
Just a shot in the dark, but any chance you can swipe an alt off a stored car to see if it fixes the problem? Could be something the rebuilder isn't catching...
... on second thought, don't do that. If it's your car and not the alternator itself, would hate to see you burn up a buddy's alternator, then you'd be out $300 and would probably hit me the next time you saw me...

Re: CEL "Check Charging System"
To update this saga, as most of you know my alternator went out about a month or so ago and I had it rebuilt which was a mistake. To save someone a future headache, don't have your alternator rebuilt. My rebuilt unit lasted just over 1 mile before it failed. Total waste of time and money. So the car has been sitting in the garage through the holidays while I researched my options. The conclusion was to buy a new alternator. After much research I settled on the PA Performance alternator. Theirs are 100% new not remanufactured and come with a lifetime warranty. So I ordered one last week and installed it today. Bingo no more charging issues. I will be changing my battery soon to an optima just for good measure but for now I'm happy to report my car is back up and running! Woot.
It's what I get for breaking my own rule of if something breaks or needs replaced always replace the broken part with something better. I tried being cheap and it cost me more in the long run than it would have if I'd just followed my own rule. Lesson learned.

Re: CEL "Check Charging System"
Glad to hear it's running again, Dave! You might check into the Sears Die Hard Platinum batteries, also - same absorbed glass mat construction as the Optima, but I believe the Platinum has a better warranty. Doesn't look as cool as the yellow Optima, though.

Re: CEL "Check Charging System"
Did you take the alt back to the builder. Also you can rebuild the alt yourself which would save a few bucks.Do you still have the old one, maybe we can fix it and sell it to help recoupe some of your money.

Re: CEL "Check Charging System"
Yeah, I'd like to sell the old one. I've still got it. Any idea where to sell it Tony? Or for $75 you can have it and maybe triple your money if you want to deal with it.
