Which Cold Air to Buy?
Alright, which Cold Air is the best? I was told that JLT and C&L were the best to get. Which one in your opinion (With a tune) offers more performance?

Yep, the C&L Racer or JLT would be tops in my book. Oh and get one from a reputable place like Brenspeed. Or if you are in Tulsa Kurtis at Archangel Motorsports could hook you up with a custom tune.

Re: Which Cold Air to Buy?
Thanks for the advice. I will most likely go with the C&L racer, as that is what most of you have recommended to me. What horsepower gains should I expect to see with my Bassani w/ Race Cat exhaust system? I would prefer to use the 87 octane.

Re: Which Cold Air to Buy?
If you do go with the C&L or JLT...get it from Brenspeed or Archangel. Both can make custom tunes for your car and put them on your tuner. If you just buy the tuner and CAI from a website..its likely it will have generic crap tunes for a multitude of cars...not specific for yours.
From a CAI and tune you can expect anywhere from 22 to 30 RWHP. Probably another 5-10rwhp with the Bassani.
The JLT and C&L are about equal on the performance side...the next thing to look at is price and looks. The C&L blends in with your stock components where the JLT sticks out. I have the JLT and love it...for the price you cant beat it. But some like how the C&L looks better. I went for price

Re: Which Cold Air to Buy?
Man I bought the roush cold air and I love it! It didn't require a tune but still pretty nice. I still don't have a tuner so I can't go with a different one.

Re: Which Cold Air to Buy?
I know which one your talking about Joshua and it doesnt require a tune for a reason. The tubing is the size of your factory Cold Air kit. If something doesnt require a tune its not worth the money.
CarFx had my car before i baught it (not by choice) and put an AFE cold air kit on there. Did nothing for performance...mainly looks..its similar to the "Roush" Cold air...which the Roush is just a knock off. Roush doesnt actually make a Cold air kit...they use another brand and stamp there name on it and charge more for it.
Joshua if your looking for performance I would go with a bigger Cold air kit like the JLT or C&L with a tuner.

Re: Which Cold Air to Buy?
I don't know man. Its not in my head about the roush CAI. I had no low end torque with the xpipe and 3" exhaust. Now its got torque and power through the entire power band. Oh and its not the same size as the stock one. I measured.

Re: Which Cold Air to Buy?
I dont deny you felt power gains from the cold air kit. The bigger filter and smoother tubing are going to allow for a little more airflow. But it has to have the same are close to your stock intakes flow rate. If it didnt it would require a tune.
The Airaid and Roush use the Venturi system which limits airflow so that a tune isnt required.
My point is there are huge gains in going with a larger tubing that requires a Tune. There is a specific flow rate and Mass Air Size that has to remain Stock in order to not require a tune. In order to do that the tubing size cant be that much bigger than stock or would throw off your Air to fuel..thus send you into a lean condition and possible detonation. Manufacturers would be prone to lawsuits and they wouldnt take that risk.
Not trying to say anything bad about the route you have taken...two each his own...but anyone looking for performance gains that are worth spending the money on and getting the most out of their dollar should look to the JLT or C&L both have around a 90mm opening, There are also some other alternatives that do add performance gains, most have about the 90mm opening that the popular ones do.

Re: Which Cold Air to Buy?
ROUSH KIT (made by Air Raid) has venturi system limiting air intake so that it doesnt require a tune.
$316
AIR RAID (makes the Roush as well but the airaid is cheaper because it doesnt say Roush) also has the venturi system to limit airflow.
$275
JLT II Cold Air Kit 90MM Mass Air
$199

C & L RACER 95 mm Mass Air

Re: Which Cold Air to Buy?
i have to go with jarrod on this one, if you dont need a tune then you are not getting much more air than with the stock setup. the stang is pretty sensitive to lots more air and will lean out quickly without a tune.

Re: Which Cold Air to Buy?
I have decided to sell the roush and the strut bar, and just get a tuner with C&L intake.

Re: Which Cold Air to Buy?
i have a c & l racer intake for you, then you can buy the tuner from brenspeed or kurtis and get your tunes included

Re: Which Cold Air to Buy?
I sometimes wish I would have gone with the C & L.... Dont get me wrong I like my JLT II... but the C & L does look better and is about 5mm larger than the JLT.
You are going to feel a nice kick in the pants once the new tune and C & L are installed Joshua. When I replaced the AFE Cold air and went for the JLT II with a tuner...it was like night and day. Car woke up big time! Let us know what you end up doing and good luck

Re: Which Cold Air to Buy?
Most of the gains from the kits that sell the CAI and tuner (I'd suggest the ones with the SCT tuner) are from the tune, not the CAI itself. The stock inlet tract will adequately feed the power an otherwise stock 3-V 4.6 will make with bolt-ons. The power is made by increasing timing and leaning the mixture a bit. That's why they make the 89-octane and 91-octane programs for these kits.
If it doesn't require a tune (and doesn't include a tuner), don't waste the money. For a couple hundred more, at most, you get a hand-held programmable-tuner, and a tune (which you can have the seller of the kit adjust for other mods you've made), that will pick you up 20 or so RWHP from leaning the mixture and increasing the timing. The CAI that comes with it is just a bonus for future modding, as it won't be a large bottle-neck.
