Test for Shelby show @ Hallett
Ok Scott Stephens called me this morning to invite us out on the 29th and 30th for some practice time before the Shelby show. It will be just HST in 3 run groups just like the show no waiting on races to finish. We will only pay the regular rate for HST but will get twice or more the track time. You guys wanted a club day here we go I will get us a raceport and a cooler of pop. We will run Counter Clockwise for these two days.

Re: Test for Shelby show @ Hallett
Because having an engine with low horse power will punish you more severely for driving mistakes! To be fast in these classes, you need to be smooth. If you start out with a strong engine, you may use horse power to cover up your driving mistakes, thus preventing you from ever actually learning to drive smoothly. You will maybe be 'ok' in your class, but never great. However, if you do not drive smoothly with a low-powered engine, you will loose significant amounts of time. This forces you very quickly to learn the smooth driving which leads to success. Once you are winning on a regular basis in the lower powered classes, you can always move up, where you will continue to benefit from your smooth driving skills.
An answer I got from a very famous person about learning to drive on a road course.
Jack Roush JR.

Re: Test for Shelby show @ Hallett
Usually HST is $95, but you have to have a COMMA membership that costs $30 a year. If you want a transponder I think it's $25 and one of those sheds is $45.
That is if memory serves me correctly.

Re: Test for Shelby show @ Hallett
"Do you ever experience frustration because you never get the opportunity
to open-up your high performance car the way you know it can perform? At
Hallett Motor Racing Circuit we have the answer for you and your car.
May 29-30 we are having an event for High Speed Touring cars. ANY
street-legal car (no SUVs, trucks, vans) can be driven on track without
the normal race prep (roll cage, race restraint harness, driver suits are
NOT required.) You need no prior competition driving experience for
this safety-first, non-race, but incredibly fun, event. If it is your first time
on track, you go through Driver Education classes with experienced
instructors (who will ride with you if you ask).
Here is what you need: 1. a Snell approved safety helmet (we have some for
rent if you don't have one), a long-sleeved shirt and long pants, and comfortable
shoes. 2. $120 cash, MC or Visa for the track time and $30 for the DE (first-timers).
This is a super bargain for a major road-racing venue. You can get an HST license
if your want, but we are waiving that fee for this special event.
Here is what you get: 1. a great day to put all stress aside, replacing it with
exciting fun. 2. The opportunity to run your car at full speed with no chance of getting
a speeding ticket. 3. Corner workers with line of sight wherever you might be driving,
fire truck, wrecker, ambulance, etc. - rarely used, but there for your safety.
If you belong to a Car Club, consider making this a Club event. We have a
great Finish Line Cafe, a playground for the kids, restrooms and showers for the
campers, beautiful Osage Hills to enjoy, and a 1.8 mile TRACK with amazing
corners and elevation changes.

Re: Test for Shelby show @ Hallett
If there's a club discount then that will make my decision much easier. Right now, I could go either the normal COMMA/HST weekend 5/23 or the next weekend (the above stated dates). I would just have to decide between Friday or Saturday...............Probably lots more open track (fewer cars) on Friday................
I can't do both. But I have to do one or the other to get the car dialed in for Mid-America.
BTW Re:George's second post
On a track like Hallett even the high hp cars suffer from UN-smoothness It's made a 5 second difference in my lap times..................so far

I'll have to pass. After running a gsxr 600 at hallett cars seem kinda slow and boring.I did put the goldwing on once.I think walking would have been faster. I do think road course's are more fun than 1/4 stuff. At one time i thought about convernting the gto over to a scca car.Good work george and everyone will have fun.Don't know who jack roush jr.is,but i have heard the same thing from Tony Stewart.

Re: Test for Shelby show @ Hallett
Great fun on a beautiful day! Good to spend some time with George Roger and Jeff. We really need to get the club more involved in this. I think people would enjoy it more than they realize. My best run was 1:39.527. Out of 5 runs, I ran #1 twice, #2 once, and #3 twice. Not too bad for a stock Shelby.

Hallett is too short on the straights for a V8 to really shine...heck most 4 banger miatas would own most anything out there. Why? Because their lighter and can take the corners at a higher rate of speed and carry it to the shorter straights. V8 is nullified
Now go to a Bigger longer "big boy" track .....thats where the fun begins!! C-YA on the straights!!

I beg to disagree. Do a little suspension work and nothing short of an open wheel car or a turbo Porche can touch you.

I think you might be wrong but hey what do I know. All I did was show up and drive with a cast on my foot and outrun nearly everyone in my run group which was a fast group.

I looked back on all the time sheets from yesterday, and I had the fastest time in the novice class. I was the only one below 1:40. The closest was 1:40.277, the rest were 1:42 and up.

Nice try; but it's a lame excuse! Now get your butt out there and HAVE SOME FUN!
On Saturday in the "experienced" group, only 3 cars ran a faster lap time than mine. Two of them were Porche 911 Turbo's and one was a CanAm style Monza closed wheel race car. My best time was a 1:32.3 (which is 2.3 seconds off my personal best) and they were running 1:29's! My tires had over 25 heat cycles on them, had no tread left and were chunking huge pieces of rubber of the outside shoulder by the 4th session. A new set of sticky's for Mid-America should have me in the sub-1:30 range
Oh! And those 4-banger Miata's? They were just in the way ALL WEEKEND!!!!
Seriously, you guys will never know how addicting this is until you just try it! You may never go back to the strip

Re: Test for Shelby show @ Hallett
I much prefer road racing over drag racing. It's just further and more expensive than drag racing. Given the choice, I'd much prefer to road race. do hallett many times and will be out there at Mid America.

Trust me..... A course like Atlanta ......the V8 would definitely run a muck. Your everyday joe driving a miata or v6 mustang would be hitting the steering wheel wishing more power!! hehe No matter how good you are in the corners...the straights would open the eyes!

Jarrod,
I've driven a couple of "fast" tracks; Texas World Speedway, Eagles Canyon. I enjoy Hallett much more! It's way more technical and more of a challenge to the "driver".
But my point was that my 3,800 lb PIG takes the corners at Hallett as fast as the lighter cars. It just takes some suspension work to get there.............Now if any of those miata's were pushing 550 rwhp at their weight, well then I might be in trouble. Oh yeah, that would be an Ariel Atom! I don't even count their times, I think they're turning laps in the high teens!!!!!!!!! FWIW, Eddie Hill has an Ariel and he prefers to drive all the way from Wichita Falls to Hallett rather than go to Eagles Canyon even though he has the horse power to use the long straights.
edit: Let me say it a different way. The corners ARE where all of the fun is!
