So I have been noticing a dime size oil spot in my garage and it is becoming more and more drops as the days go by. I check my oil and sure enough I am low so I need to address the issue. I clean the entire under carriage and take it to my dads house who has a under ground storm shelter in the garage that I use as a pit. Anyway, it only seems to leak once the engine gets really warm but sure enough It appears to be leaking all around the oil pan. So this is where I usually stop and take it to someone else to fix it but come on man it is a few bolts. This approach ALWAYS ends up getting me in trouble but I proceed. I start with what appears to be the 2 hardest bolts to reach, if those come loose then I will take the pan down, if not screw it I am not going to do it and cause myself hours of greif. Well all of the bolts come out and for once I have the tools needed to do the job. As the pan starts to lower down (yes I drained the oil I am not stupid) I start to get overwhelmed with a sense of pride, Oh yes I am doing this myself. Then it drops and in my excitment I tear of the old gasget and start to slide the pan out. And that my friend is where the problem raised its ugly head, this bad boy is not going to slide out. (Ok, I am stupid) So that is my delimia, the pan is down, the gasket can be put back.

I am reading over this manual I bought and it is stating that I need to take out the motor mounts, raise the engine and drop something about 2 inches. I am glad I live in OKC so I dont have to see you people in my day to day life. Im not sure what I am going to do but I will take it step by step. I just cant believe I am going to raise my engine to get to this gasket.

Hey Kevin!! Long time bud! Sorry to hear of your dilemma! Seems one problem always leads to another. The motor mounds and raising of the engine should not be a problem...YOU GOT THIS! I guess I am not comprehending where the problem is....you got the pan down......gasket is off....you said you can put it back up there....why do you have to raise the engine?

To get the pan completely off the car you will have to either raise the engine or support it and lower the k member. I suppose there is a possibility you can clean the surface of the pan and block and put a new gasket in place without doing all that but it may be a chore. I've never done one on a S197 so I can't say for sure one way or another.

I am going to get an engine hoist next week and see if I can get it done. Thanks for the replys guys I appreciate the support. I will have to raise the engine to get that pan out so I can clean it up and put on the new gasket, right now I have about 2 inch gap to work with and would be afraid that it would be half ass. I assume that is how Mr. Paint in OKC did to begin with which puts me in my current position.

Jarrod that is a nice ride my friend. I love that color, you have gone big time on me.

Update, I have the oil pan off the car without damaging anything else. I pretty excited about that fact alone. I have a new oil pan since the last one seemed bent (Long Story) so now I have a new pan, new gasket, sealant and a tork socket. I have a manual that states that this is a self sealing gasket and only require a small amount of sealent. Has anyone done this, anything to watch out for? Should the gasget go on the pan with sealent then onto the car? My main concern is how and where to use this sealant. I mess that up and I will be doing this drill all over.

the sealant goes on four places at the front were the timing cover meets the block and at the rear were the rear main seal plate meets the block.

I used a brace instead of the engine hoist. It cost $60 bucks and it used the fender well for leverage to lift the engine. Very easy to use for what little I lifting I needed done. I pulled the pan and sure enough if was all gooped up where it appeared that someone had try to pry off the wrong way in the past. So Mr. Paint on Reno Street in OKC must have noticed the leak and gooped up extra sealant to keep it from leaking. Regardless, A new pan is on their now and I am good to go. Found a guy to repaint my Bumper and this time I took the bumper off and dropped it off. :)
