might be buying an 86 GT.
sold the durango and looking at an 86 for my new DD. went to look at it and it's the original owner selling. starts and runs great. he's replacing the brake master cylinder and i'll be driving it tomorrow. completely stock except for the cat back was replaced.
my only issue is i have no idea what to do with one. all my experience is obviously with the s197

yeah know that. pretty sure the first things will be a major clean up of the engine compartment and maybe sanding and working on the hail damage

Very Cool Bob! How many miles? Got pics? TONS and I mean TONS of aftermarket goodies for them. They're getting pretty cheap too!

Re: might be buying an 86 GT.
Ok. I have some exp here since I have owned two of them.
1. As mentioned they are non mas air (speed density)
2. They do not have the newer E7TE heads found on 87-93 cars. The 86 heads have smaller valves. The compression ratio is different too so be careful if changing the cam.
3. I would look at buying a mass air conversion. New heads, GT40 or similar intake, larger TB, my cam choice would be a B303 because I like the lope and power curve for NA combos, 373 gears with new traction lock, aluminum DS, solid motor mounts, new 3 core radiator and electric fan, new water pump, new timing chain, 1 5/8" equal length shorty headers, 2 1/2" O/R H-Pipe, Flowmaster American thunder cat back kit, also for a 5 speed car I would buy a Tremec (stock T5 trans is uber weak! It will break once you upgrade the power), hurst shifter for the Tremec, new 10 1/2" flywheel (lightweight) and new HD clutch, subframe connectors are a must!!, HD upper and lower control arms, 8.8 axle girdle.
This combo should be good for 12 second runs on sticky tires.
Good luck! I've always loved the 86

that would be some commute jared. i moved from texas to colorado. ;) since this will be my DD i will be trying to keep it from being an extreme gas hog. any performace goodies will likely still go in the 07. i'll just be getting it all pretty for a while if we do get it. hope to find out today.

Re: might be buying an 86 GT.
its going to suck in the winter... and they tend to slide easily when it first rains. so, easy on the clutch if its a 5sp. i would def. reccomend a new cooling sys. those dam stock 5.0's like to overheat easy.

Re: might be buying an 86 GT.
thanks for the info all. i did buy it and am driving it now. it's as stock as it was from the showroom floor. still has smog on the thing. bought it from the original owner w/ many many miles on it. no engine rebuild at 250K. needs some hail damage repaired, a new dash pad, and the center arm rest. the interior is in much better shape than i would think.
found a few friends when removing the interior. a couple of them were alive under the back seat.
still super greasy after 2 cleanings w/ simplegreen. had about a 1/8 inch before we started.
here's my wife doing her first tune up. grease to her elbows

Re: might be buying an 86 GT.
Wow... 250k miles! Awesome. Nice four eye! Don't see too many of them anymore especially in bone stock condition. Normally they've been modded / molested beyond belief. Any rust??? Did you buy it in Co?
BTW David... Your wife likes working on my stang and but loves working on my wang...

at 250k you'd be amazed at how good it's running.

Re: might be buying an 86 GT.
Didn't realize it was a notch. Those are fairly rare with the 5.0 in 1986. You don't see hardly any at all. If you can restore it you'll have somthing that not very many people have. 1986 LX 5.0 is a rarity indeed.

Re: might be buying an 86 GT.
i've been told that by a few people. for now the plan is to just make it pretty, no go fast goodies. think i should keep it stock as it gets or will it really matter in the end.
