95 v6 Catless
I have a 95 v6 with a full headers back dual exhaust system with flowmasters on it. One of my cats has cracked and is leaking exhaust, and rather than spending the money to replace it, im considering just having both the cats cut out. I dont know a lot about exhaust systems, would this affect the sound/performance of the car much? Based on what I know it would seem that it would be louder and if anything increase power but I wasnt sure. Also if it affected the sound would it affect the tone or just the volume level?

Re: 95 v6 Catless
Isaac, it would make the car louder and also chance the tone a bit. Your check engine light would come on due to the rear oxygen sensors not sensing the Cats anymore. There is no telling what it would sound like.....might search youtube and see if you can find a video.
There are MIL eliminator kits you can buy to get the engine light to turn off.

Re: 95 v6 Catless
I was reading on some other forums that the 95s only have 2 O2 sensors, that they didnt start putting 4 in until 96. Does anyone know if this is correct? b/c if so then I wouldnt even have to worry about that at all.

Re: 95 v6 Catless
Just take a peek under the car. If it has 4 it will have two before the cats and two after.

Re: 95 v6 Catless
Just get some high flow cats, cutting them out on a V6 does change the tone.

Re: 95 v6 Catless
oh, and any recommendations on as to where to buy/how much it should cost for the high flow cats? Like I said earlier, I'm a newbie with exhaust stuff.

Re: 95 v6 Catless
yea bud, it will def. sound like poop unless you are boosted on a V6.... just not enough backpressure to make it sound even halfway decent...
If your cats are bad, this could be a good time to upgrade to a set of longtubes and an h-pipe as well if you haven't already....

Re: 95 v6 Catless
true true... just do what you can, and modify it as you need to to make it sound better...
Re: 95 v6 Catless
so I still havent got these fixed, car sounds like its about to fall apart cause the cracked cat squeaks so bad lol. Anyways I am considering just buying some high flo cats off of american muscle and installing them myself. What I was wondering is, the cats come with hardware to just bolt them on and I was wondering if it would be significantly better to go ahead and take it to a shop and have them welded, or does it really matter?

Re: 95 v6 Catless
Yea, better to have it done right and get them welded up. what brand are you looking at on americanmuscle? Id suggest magnaflow i love them...
Re: 95 v6 Catless
I was looking at these. http://www.americanmuscle.com/pypes-ceramic-catalytic-converter.html
They have quite a few reviews from other v6 owners saying how great they sounded on their sixer.

Re: 95 v6 Catless
Pypes brand is fine. Never had a problem with them and many other members on the forum have used them. Now the Cats are definitely a different story, but I see no reason not to trust them.

Re: 95 v6 Catless
If it were my car I would get a full replacement true dual exhaust from the manifolds back. I'd do the O/R midpipe and find a set of mufflers I liked to give it a good exhaust note. That's just my $.02

Ive already got a full true dual exhaust with flowmasters on it. It was installed by the dealer when the car was new.

Re: 95 v6 Catless
Well, in that case just change out the carted pipe with an O/R version and see how it sounds.

Re: 95 v6 Catless
I was considering doing that, but everyone told me that a v6 without cats would sound like crap....

Re: 95 v6 Catless
Eh, it's going to sound like a V6. Nothing you can do about that. I bet it would sound ok with the flows and all. The flows will keep the exhaust tone deep. All you can do is try it. If it doesn't sound right you can always add cats after the fact. You may be surprised though and like it without them.

Re: 95 v6 Catless
true...I'm attempting to go for the most cost effective way to do this right now tho. It would appear that just replacing the cats would be cheaper than adding in an x-pipe and then maybe having to put cats in later anyways. I could always just put in the hi-flow cats and then if it doesnt sound as good as it does now, add in an x-pipe later. Overall i'm fairly happy with the sound I have and would like to stay fairly close to it. If it got deeper I wouldnt complain but I dont want to go any higher thats for sure.

At the end of the day, its all about your budget, and what you can get for that budget... get what you can, and if you dont like them, swap them out and sell them...
