Aluminum Driveshafts and Vibration Potential

Post by Corepuncher on 9/27/2011, 5:05 am

Well, I was contemplating getting a 1 piece driveshaft, mainly to reduce weight but scouring the net I am finding all sorts of issues with them being unbalanced and vibrating, not to mention several Dynotech ones breaking.

Most of these posts were 2009 or so...does anyone know if they have gotten any better over the last couple years?

I have sorta been turned off by the whole thing, especially since it's 700 bucks AND it may cause vibration. If I could guarantee no vibrations I may do it.

there are several companies that make good drive shafts. i had one on my car, we never did figure out the vibration issue. had some kind of balance issue going on that wasnt related to the driveshaft itself.

the big thing with a one piece is you will need addition supporting parts. an adjustable upper control arm(or lowers) is mandatory so you can properly adjust the pinion angle.

there are pros and cons. personaly if i was going to do it again i would buy a carbon fiber with true cv joints. they run about a grand but can withstand up to 1500 hp.

the biggest pro i found (besides the reduced rotating mass) with mine is i went from getting 26 mpg on the highway to getting 27.5 when i had the aluminum driveshaft. there are alot of people successfully running one pieces. worth it if you can get it working.
