Drag Racing! Empty Drag Racing!

Post by Corepuncher 11/22/2011, 11:20 pm

Now that my car is a beast, I am more than ever interested in putting it to the test. We have Thunder Valley down here in Noble.

I definitely need a set of slicks. There is just no other way I can get traction. Looking on craigslist now. Found one set of slicks and rims here:

http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/pts/2665262408.html

What do you guys think? I'm not sure about "less than 50 passes"...geesh, how many burnouts can you actually do on a set? I know I'm not gonna be doing this ALL the time, so not wanting to get new wheels and tires. But something like this.

I'm afraid of the dreaded 1-2 grind showing up as I"m trying to race. That would be really embarrassing. I'm gonna have to practice somewhere lol...but where.

Breakin records? If I can get some good shifts down from what I have read from others, I should be in the 10's with this setup.

Good luck with that, these cars take TONS of practice to get into the tens. No, breakin parts, specifically your drive shaft, you are right on the edge power wise, when you hook with that much power the weakest link will pop.

Practice makes perfect. The first 60' of track is really where you make or break a run. Traction and a good launch is the key. It is a fine line between spin and bog or breakage. At your power level the factory clutch, driveshaft etc are all on the edge. I would venture to guess that you may want to upgrade your control arms. Lowers and upper. The stock pieces will flex bad with the amount if power you'll be trying to harness. Slicks will amplify the flex and cause the tires to unload (wheel hop) which can also lead to breakage. Whatever you do just have fun and be safe.

that add for the wheels/tires doesn't give you an offset. those might not even work with our cars.

I get 100-130 passes a set on my bracket car. We get 12 passes a set on the 10.5 car (They are still good just uneven). The 50 passes stated above depends greatly on the car and driver. Cut the tip off a toothpick, take it and a sharpie with you when you look at them. Press the toothpick in the wear indicator hole and mark with the sharpie. Measure it when you get home and post the results. I'll tell you how many passes you can expect to have left on an 11-12 sec car.

10s are going to be a tall order, but not unattainable with the right setup with your power. Some of the faster 2011 GT500s in the country have gone 11.16 @ 124 mph Factory stock everything, just some bigs and littles installed. These numbers are being achieved on the coast where the air is much better and the driver is experienced.

Now this guy can also DRIVE HIS ASS OFF, which is reflected in the time. There is a complete write-up on SVTperformance.com about his efforts. I have no doubt with a smaller pulley and tune, he would be a 10 second car.

Now for us that dont live on the coast and are new to drag racing and or can not drive it like we stole it, expect anywhere from an 11.4-12.2 @ 120-122 mph with full slicks and a good 60ft. with lots of practice

From what I can tell 12.2 is stock 2011 shelby time, or at least the "quoted" time from Ford. Given my TVS and 2.59 pulley (30% more power) it would seem logical, especially with slicks, to shave off a second or more. We shall see. Plus I have the perilous 1-2 shift which is not easy especially when you are under stress like 1st race! I'll have to make a concerted effort to shift very slow and deliberate. After that, it's easy.

I was not aware you had a TVS? I thought you still had the stock blower with just a smaller pulley and tune?

Maybe I have been living under a rock, I knew you were trying to work a deal...didnt know you finalized it. So Van hooked you up with a tune from lund for everything done?

hell yeah! Dude, this car is a fricken rocket. That is why I'm saying 10's lol. I thought my car was fast before, now it just puts it to shame.

So yes, now I have a Ford Racing TVS, a 2.59" pulley, CobraJet TB, and Jon Lund Tune. Just got it installed last weekend.

I got the blower, brand new from Van, he went down to $2725 shipped. It was basically 20 below the cheapest elsewhere.

My boost gauge gets pegged. Only goes up to 15 lol. I can lay down pure rubber in 3rd gear...and that is with my 315/35 tires. I can't imagine what kind of break neck acceleration it would have in 1st gear if somehow I could keep tires planted lol.

Wow congrats! I would say work on your suspension setup and find a nice Big and little tire combo if 10s are your goal.

Oh and post some pics of the new blower!

I highly doubt your gonna get 10's first time out. Your mph gonna be 125-130 range probably if you drive it hard. The first 60ft is the key, you need at least drag radial, I would hold off on slicks unless you get some skinnies/bias tires up front unless you want to feel your ass end sway back and forth and scare shit out of ya on the big end.

Also, I don't care how many times you practice on street, being at the lights on the strip totally different, your gonna be very nervous and likely to light up tires. Got to ride out the clutch on the heavy beast with around a 3000rpm launch.

Sure Dustin, you can take my car out anytime :-)

I agree David...I already know I'll be nervous as hell. Nervous + this tranny = 2nd gear grind almost every time. I've tried some mock launches on the street and experimented with what RPM to start at. Once this TVS boost kicks in it's all over and traction is lost. Would it be better to have clutch partially engaged and higher rpms...or lower RPMS with full clutch. Eh...at any rate, I'm thinking a "smooth and gradual" increase in throttle will be warranted. I wonder when the tracks close for winter. Probably wont' matter as I do not have drag radials.

The one time I got it to hook it was smooth gradual throttle riding the clutch somewhat! Nothing like my 95 cobra where I could put it at 5k and dump the clutch and go. You can NOT do that with these cars, very very tricky.

you won't be a good driver till you've been doing this for a couple seasons. even then if you're not going to practice at least twice a month then you'll probably be just an okay driver after a couple seasons.

Not to be a dick but I'm gonna say u run 13.50's. These cars take a lot and yeah u have a lot more power but that just makes it harder. With a LOT of seat time I'd say mid 11's with lots of suspension mods. If ur looking to get some street practice pm me I can prob point u in the right direction.

Let me know if ur going to TV I may be able to roll out with you

Totally understand, it will take experience, but as time goes on I'm getting to know my car better and better. Have you ever driven on that "Sheriff's track"?

I did some data logging behind my house for the first time tonight. It's a 4 lane wide open and less traveled paved road. Had the ole laptop in the passenger seat. Went down the road a bit turned around. I didn't start from a dead stop, but from 30 mph to 124, it was 9.8 seconds. I understand 0-30 is where it's at of course. I did not measure distance, only speed and time in the spreadsheet. I imagine 0-30 might take on the order of 2 seconds with a shift in there perhaps. I'll have to do some more testing for fun. This data logging is great, I can just "drive", and come home and analyze after the fact.

If you plan to run at Noble, Thunder Valley and run a 11.49 or faster they will boot you without a six point roll cage. They are strict even with test and tune.

Take it to the track and you will know exactly what it does, not to be an a$$hole but it all changes when you line up at the track, things dont always go as planned in your head, and before you know it you are at the end of the track and you are cussing yourself asking why did I do that? These cars are not the easiest cars in the world to launch and trust me that is where it is all done, to much gas spin, not enough bog. I make quite a bit of power and I could not find the sweet spot when I went to the track. I have full suspension mods and drag radials with 3.73 gears. I tried different rpm launches we even tried starting in second, the car would just spin,it was even breaking loose in third gear. It was a 98 degree day that didnt help but the best we could run that day was 12.0. Just remember be safe have fun and dont over expect to much from the first couple of times out.
