road racing suspension?
been talking to the wife lately about the 86. she wants to keep it and make it into a streetable road course car. so the question is......
what needs to be done to an 86 lx coupe that is quite literally bone stock. give it all to me lca's, uca's, springs, shocks/struts, a 6 point cage maybe. also remember this is most definitely going to have a tight budget so don't tell me the biggest baddest super expensive stuff out there.
some pics if you've forgotten the car ;) it's pretty beat up
right before i left to come over here (afghan) we cut out the bent radiator support and replaced it.
i also have found a new 4 eyed hood since i rear ended someone and had to go cheap with an 87+ front. this will absolutely go away and return to the 4 eyes

Re: road racing suspension?
MRT or Steeda make great kits for road racing a fox car. Long story short you'll want the obvious, upper and lower LCA's, Springs all the way around, subframe connectors, caster camber plates, possible roll cage, and a major brake upgrade. In fact you'll probably want to think about a 5-lug conversion and go disk in the rear.

Re: road racing suspension?
Car build is just not synonymous with cheap... You can minimize the wallet impact by searching the internet and various forums for used parts etc. Besides the one's David mentioned, Maximum Motorsport also has good stuff for the fox.

Re: road racing suspension?
thanks for the input. one thing i do want to keep is some decent comfort level for me to be driving it daily. right now it's pretty harsh, but i'm wondering if most of that is due to it having 260k + miles on it. it does still have the stock suspension and that could be much of the problem with it being so hard. how will lowering springs and maybe adjustable shocks/struts be for the street. softer for the street and nice and firm on the track

Re: road racing suspension?
isn't it a pretty straight forward swap for the brakes from something like a 95ish mustang. thought i was told once you can also use ranger stuff for the brakes

Re: road racing suspension?
U can use ranger parts. I'd say new springs and adjustable shocks would be the ticket for DD. Also my experience with the fox chassis has been that the better job you do making the frame stiffer the smoother it seemed to ride. It let's the suspension absorb the bumps instead of the car. Subframe connectors help quite a bit with this.

Re: road racing suspension?
how well will the stock T5 trans hold up for this. obviously not launching the car on slicks so would it be okay with maybe some basic bolt-ons. the car runs and shifts great still.
i was also wondering about using my stock 3.55's from my 07 to put in the 86. both are 8.8 diffs so should fit no problem, but i was wondering if being built for this purpose a different gear would be better

Re: road racing suspension?
The T-5 might hold up with some upgrades. Needs steel bearing retainer and world class parts kit at the very least. I would think about a Tremec swap though if you plan to beat on it much. The gear ratios you may need to experiment with. For road course it will depend alot on how much motor you have and tires and brakes. Lots more variables in road racing than just 1/4 mile jaunts.

Re: road racing suspension?
Agreed with David and Jarrod. Would have to see the car in person, but with 260k miles, chances are you have some dried up bushings, slightly bent suspension parts (Depending on how the car is driven), worn out shocks/springs, and more.
Doing all of the upgrades above will make the car much more rigid, and while it won't be as good as it was in OEM shape (ride quality), it will probably much better than you are used to. Not to mention it will drive on rails.
BTW, I wish my wife would like me have a road course car... LOL
fixed...

I dis agree.
You will find the ride quality BETTER than the OEM ride if you set it up right. I speak from experience with the 8 or so fox 5.0's I've had over the years including 2 86 models that I've built over the years.

Re: road racing suspension?
I would definitely look to upgrade the Transmission. I don't know how they came on the 86 GT, but the stock T-5 on the 94-04 is junk. they start going out with any aggressive shifting. Would look at either a World Class rebuild or a TKO-500. Both are great options.
The gears will all depend on your final build. 3.55s will definitely be better than 2.73s, and if you already have them that saves.

Is it pretty rough from the factory?

I didn't see where Jarrod posted? Or are you saying David and Jarrod are one entity?

Re: road racing suspension?
wow well talking to the wife ( i know i have a great one that lets me have more than one car), we won't buy anything new from a vendor till my time here is almost up. i will be looking for used parts that won't be affected by the fact that they are used. if it comes down to it we'll probably spend up to 2k for parts specific to the suspensipn. maybe buy a maxim motorsports package like paul suggested. i looked at steeda and their site doesn't have full packages like maxims

Re: road racing suspension?
I personally swear by Steeda, but MM has some great package deals. If you venture around the various forums you can find stuff hella cheap though... And suspension parts are things that don't tend to wear if taken care of...

Re: road racing suspension?
In road racing.... braking is every bit as important as accelerating if not more. Since price is a consideration... look for a set of good cobra brakes... These are two piston setup and while not Brembos or Baer... but work pretty decent.
I'd also suggest running two types of pads... One dedicated for the street and one for the track. They have some they say that they are good for both... but not so much. Hawk is a good one to use.
Also.. . switch to a DOT 4 fluid.

Re: road racing suspension?
And change all rubber lines to braided. The older fox cars will benefit from this as the old rubber lines are probably showing their age quite a bit at this point.
As to salvage parts. Do a search on musclemustangs and fast fords magazine web site. They did a whole tech segment on fox Brake upgrades that as I recall listed parts that were interchangeable between different fords that would upgrade the system.

Re: road racing suspension?
Would definitely go with the 13" Cobra brake set-up. Will work great from 94-04. Great upgrade from the PBR Setup.
I have a set of 03 Cobra Spindles, not sure if they can transfer to the fox or not, could be worth finding out. Did the Cobra swap to Tyler's 04 GT and have these left over.
