Car FX doing Headers
I have determined to get the exhaust note I want I will have to have long tubes put on the Shelby. Only shop in town willing to do it is Car FX. Do they do good work, and can I trust them to do it right?

Re: Car FX doing Headers
let me drive your car for a week and i'll install them lol
But seriously im sure a few people will give you their opinions on carfx. They were kind of dicks to me when i went in a few years ago asking about work on my car. If its not an 05+ its not precious enough for them to touch it. oh andi hear they really like to bend you over money wise.

Re: Car FX doing Headers
That shop has a very bad reputation with Mustang owners around town. They do make nice cars, but they will rake you over the coals with pricing, and their customer service is very sub par...
Can I ask why you want a shop to do the install and not buy a nice 30-pack and have all of us help some weekend?

Re: Car FX doing Headers
Used them regularly prior to joining the forum, never had an issue with will and his boys. About 5% overpriced put if u can prove it cheaper somewhere else he works with you, or he always has on mine. He did TONS to my 06 GT before I sold it. Also nothing but friendly. But I see other people have varied opinions.

Rick to the rescue!!
As mentioned I too am not crazy about CarFX. Bad experience in the past, and you might as well give them your bank account number for pricing.
I am also not too trusting of their car knowledge. They tend to push you to what they sell (which makes them money, but doesnt serve you too well)
As far as the header install, I dont see how they can screw it up but there's always a possiblity...exhaust leaks can be a PITA.
Id take Rick up on his offer.

Re: Car FX doing Headers
Save yourself the hundreds of dollars they will probably charge you and do it yourself. Make a day out of it with some friends. Its not something that a person with no mechanical knowledge cant do but it can be time consuming if you have a small area to work with few tools. I have no experience with this place but just because they are still in business doesn't mean much anymore. I've heard the dumbest things in my life come out of the mouths of long time dealership workers and shop owners.

Re: Car FX doing Headers
its an easy job. just time consuming. raise the engine and support it, remove the starter, slide the rack and opinion forward a bit, remove motor mounts and brackets. remove the cats and then the headers. use the new bolts with the headers and try to figure out how to side them fockers in. I done short headers before but never long tubes.
I have a PDF file on the install.

Re: Car FX doing Headers
Official quote from Car FX is $1750 for JBA longtube headers without cats installed, and $2000 with cats. Asked about just the labor and it was $500.
Going to call a few other shops and price the install, because it is not a job I want to tackle. If the things leak I would rather drop the car off and say fix it.

Re: Car FX doing Headers
So you're looking at over $1200 for just the headers? That's double what you should be paying. You can get them for around $600 all day long. All week long for that matter.
Call Greg... David and I would do the install. Just too busy.

Re: Car FX doing Headers
Hey Jake,
Here is some great info and pictures of VMPs Dynotech install!!
http://www.vmptuning.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1094
Quote from the write up
The Dynatech 1 7/8" LTs phsyically bolt up to all 07-12 GT500s because they use the same motor/chassis, but there are some minor differences on 2011+.
The 2011+ GT500 uses a new 2.75" exhaust and switches to an H pipe instead of the X found on 07-10.
They also use wideband front O2 sensors with a different connector.
On 07-10 we traditionally use the Dynatech LTs and 2.5" or 3" x-pipe (retails for $1199).
http://www.vmptuning.com/store/index...356&parent=108
http://www.vmptuning.com/store/index...411&parent=108
If we use the 2.5" x pipe its much smaller than the stock catback, if we use the 3" x pipe its larger and requires the catback be cut down and adapted, which I prefer not to do.
I had a 2011 in the shop last week for TVS and LT install, and this is what I did:
The Dynatech LTs were installed and the 2.75" powercat converters bolted up. Then I cut the the stock H pipe, I believe it needs to be around 22-23" long, measure your individual car first.. The H pipe can be clamped or welded into the cats. Depending on how everything goes together, the H may need to be cut a little bit so the tubes can spread open 1/2" where they go into the cats, this can be done by cutting the back side of the H which allows the tubes that go into the cat to spread out a little, and then welding the H back up. If you weld onto the cats, you may want to bolt everything up a little loose, tack in position, drop it down to weld, and then bolt it back up tight.
Doing it this way allows you to keep the stock H (some prefer it for sound vs an X) and it is actually a little cheaper too, ($1050 total with cats, or $758 without cats):
http://www.vmptuning.com/store/index...356&parent=108
http://www.vmptuning.com/store/index...418&parent=108
or
http://www.vmptuning.com/store/index...419&parent=108
I also sell the parts to do this on 07-10 too, you can buy 2.5" collector adapters or cats and mate them up to your stock 07-10 stamped X pipe (or H pipe on KRs):
http://www.vmptuning.com/store/index...389&parent=108
http://www.vmptuning.com/store/index...423&parent=108
This reduces the cost to $758 no cats or $1048 with cats for LTs on an 07-09.
I will say that my 07 with LTs, 3" X-pipe/cats, and stock mufflers sounded pretty good. If I did it with 2.5" x pipe it would probably be a little quieter with no loss in HP for a sub 800rwhp car. I probably not not be afraid to run LTs/no cats/stock mufflers from a noise perspective on an 07-09 with 2.5" exhaust..
On the 11 with LTs and cats, it is a tad on the loud side (for me), which some may like, but not unbearable IMO. I think the factory exhaust is a little louder with its H pipe and 2.75" muffler, so the LT/cat setup is louder.
For anyone with a 2011-2012 that purchases these, I can include the correct style O2 extension for the new factory widebands.

Re: Car FX doing Headers
I would make sure whatever header you put on should be ceramic coated. your not going to see them but ceramic helps get the heat out its worth the extra money. The more you turn up the boost the more heat your going to need to get out. I have ceramic long tubes on my car and after a run down the track you can hold them after a few min.
If you don't have a rack to install headers don't try it on the 500's they suck I've done a few. Put the car on a lift support the engine and make life easier.

Re: Car FX doing Headers
JBA they fit like a glove I would swear ford and JBA worked together cause I've never seen a header that you didn't have to beat the hell of them piece them together or some other crazy crap. I use the factory MLS gaskets also because I HATE exhaust leaks

Re: Car FX doing Headers
jake ill do the header install for free if you dont take it to carfx. FREE!!!!
me and carfx dont get along...not since my brakes blew out going down the road...long story short if you put braided brake lines that are too short on a car your asking for trouble.

Re: Car FX doing Headers
Wow, can't believe I missed this one, I wouldn't even touch long tubes on a gt500 unless your trying to get every last bit of hp out. I would take that 2000 quote, save 1500 more and buy the tvs blower kit from vmp. Better bang for the buck and it takes a little over a hour to do a blower install.

Re: Car FX doing Headers
They only sell paxton superchargers, go figure! Most 4.6 respond better to a twin screw or roots blower but they want to sell you a centri paxton, if I see paxton on a 4.6 I know 100% where it came from.

i wouldnt say 100%, im going to use a paxton novi 2200 on my car eventually....after i put together a built 5.0 stroker. i guarantee my Novi wont come from them. i wouldn't trust them with a sharpened stick.
