does overdrive automatically shut off
Lately my overdrive has shut itself off and flashed the od dash light when I am driving around town. I cant get the light to go off unless and kill the engine and restart it. do s197s detect stop and go traffic and shut off OK automatically? Is my transmission going out?

That doesn't sound normal. I have no experience here so I am not able to help. My guess would be a bad switch on the shifter or a bad connection.

You need to find out what code is in the tranny. When the OD light flashes it is setting a code. Those trannies had a bushings that would come apart and plug the solenoids.

I found this.
http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forums/2005-2010-mustang-gt-tech/144201-what-does-mean-when-o-d-light-flashes.html
Lots of ideas of places to look. Do you have a tune for the car? some have had the issue of the tune being too aggressive. Also some have had it being an issue of a stuck solenoid. Definitely need to get it checked and have the code read if it is throwing a code.
